How to Clean a Play Couch: The Complete Parent’s Guide

A play couch lives a hard life. It is a fort, a crash pad, a snack zone, and occasionally the landing site for a full cup of juice. The good news is that every major play couch is designed to be cleaned. The trick is knowing what to wash, what to spot treat, and what to never put in the dryer.

1. Remove the covers completely. Never wash a cover with the foam still inside. It will destroy the foam.
2. Wash cold, separately. Cold water preserves color and fabric integrity, and washing covers alone prevents zipper snags on other laundry.
3. Use mild detergent and skip bleach and fabric softener. Softener can break down the water-repellent finish on premium fabrics.
4. Air dry, or tumble dry on low. Check your care tag. High heat can shrink a cover to the point it will not zip back over the foam.

For everyday use, washing covers every four to eight weeks is plenty. Spot clean in between.

Step 2: Spot Clean Stains on Covers

For dried or set-in stains, treat before washing. Use an upholstery or carpet spot cleaner with a damp rag. Blot rather than scrub, because scrubbing pushes the stain deeper and abrades the fabric. If you have microsuede, brush the nap back into place with a soft brush once it is dry.

Step 3: Rescue the Foam After a Spill

This is the part parents get wrong most often. Foam is essentially a giant sponge, so speed matters.

1. Strip the cover immediately so liquid stops wicking into the foam.
2. Blot with dry towels, pressing firmly to pull the liquid out. Do not rub.
3. Spot clean if needed with a cloth dampened in warm water and a drop of dish soap. Never soak the foam or run water over it.
4. Dry completely before re-covering, near a fan or an open window but out of direct sunlight, since UV degrades foam. This can take 24 hours or more.

For accidents involving urine or milk, add a 50/50 white vinegar and water spray after blotting to neutralize odor, then blot again and dry fully.

Step 4: Regular Maintenance

• Vacuum weekly with an upholstery attachment, or run a lint roller over the covers between washes.
• Rotate and flip cushions so wear spreads evenly.
• Air out the foam for an hour whenever the covers are in the wash.
